USS Vesta NCC-82601
Beta Quadrant
Stardate: 76036.9

“Commander T’Lawra, on behalf of everyone on my crew and the Federation I want to thank you and your crew for being excellent travelling companions!”

Standing in transporter room one, Captain Zack Marshall-Bennet was wishing goodbye to his counterpart from the RRW Valdenor. The Vesta’s commanding officer was one year away from being fifty, but had maintained his boyish charm over the years he had spent in Starfleet. Rising through the ranks rapidly due to the Dominion War, he had spent the last two decades refining his trade in being one of the most notable Starfleet captains. He had a flare of being able to mix his skills to be quite effective in leading a range of missions.

That said his accomplishments and reputation was small compared to the woman he had developed respect for over the past twelve months. Commander T’Lawra was a much older woman than Zack had originally guessed (he had heard her hinting at being over a century old once). Even though she was quite reserved in her approach, the two of them had developed a firm working relationship that ensured that cooperation between their two crews was effective. For the last year the crews of the Vesta and Valdenor had undergone a joint exploration program in the Beta Quadrant on the far side of Romulan Republic territory. It had been the furthest the Vesta had visited since Starfleet preferred to keep it close to home, but it was felt that its involvement in such a mission would go a long way in developing relations further with the Romulan Republic. Bennet, being a vocal critic of Starfleet’s lack of deep space exploration, had been eager to see the mission through. Now it was ending and the moment was slightly bittersweet.

T’Lawra, was a veteran of the former Romulan Empire’s Star Navy that had left with her crew and ship when the former empire had collapsed. Being a part of the republic was, in her own words, more agreeable to her and everyone that served under her. She was just a few inches smaller than Zack but her presence in any room was always felt by her commanding conduct. Her thick dark brown hair was styled in the typical short-cut bob stereotypical of Romulans. Rarely did she smile and when she did it made those who did not know her feel nervous. Zack had felt that the first time he had seen her do that during a diplomatic mission a few weeks ago. That said, he had now got used to it.

“The pleasure was all ours.” She said with a wry smile and extended her hand to shake Zack’s hand. It was very un-Romulan of her to perform such an action but Zack appreciated it. As he shook her hand she spoke up again. “We’ve proven to our people and both governments that joint operations can happen. Captain, you’ve earned a friend in the Romulan Republic.”

“Commander, the feeling is mutual.” Bennet said as they let go of their handshake. “Next time we do this make sure you bring enough Romulan ale.”

Smirking at that remark, T’Lawra nodded in agreement and turned around to step up onto the transporter platform. Flanked either side by her first officer and security chief, she signalled that she was ready to beam back to her Valdore-class ship.

“Energise chief.” Zack ordered his Boslic transporter chief.

The transporter beam was activated and within a few seconds the Romulan contingent had left the Vesta. Giving out a big sigh from behind him, Commander Natashar Rozan spoke up. “I think I may miss them.” Rozan held three positions on the Vesta. Not only was she its chief counsellor but she was also its chief diplomatic officer and second officer. The Betazoid had become one of Zack’s finest officers and closest confidants since he took command of the Vesta over six years ago.

Agreeing with her sentiments, Zack nodded twice before snapping out of the moment in saying goodbye to their Romulan friends. “I think it’s time we headed back home.”

“Back to Starbase Twenty-Three?” His first officer asked.

Nodding to confirm, Zack looked at Commander Lucas Rider. “Absolutely Number One.”

Rider, who was only a few months younger than Zack, was one of the finest first officers that Zack had served with. A former security and tactical officer that had served on multiple assignments, when Zack had been looking for a first officer to join him on the Vesta he had been quick to accept Rider’s application. When Zack had met Lucas, he had a full head of dark auburn coloured hair, unfortunately though in the past few years his hair had receded and was losing its natural colour. Rider should have left a long time ago to take command of his own ship but had insisted on staying with Zack. The two had developed a strong friendship, one built on trust, mutual respect and their shared interest including a number of holonovels. The latter had overspilled to others on the crew.

The intercom chime then went off followed by the voice of the ship’s chief security and tactical officer, Lieutenant Commander Michael Johnson. “Bridge to Captain Bennet.”

Tapping his combadge naturally, Bennet responded and used the nickname that his security chief had been given by Rozan back when the Vesta launched. “Go ahead MJ.”

“Sorry to interrupt you sir, but we’ve just received orders from Starfleet Command to head to Starbase Bravo at once.”

Surprised to hear the change of destination for the Vesta, Zack ordered for them to get underway while he made his way back to the bridge with Rider and Rozanov.

Starbase Bravo
Beta Quadrant
Stardate: 76039.7

Once the Vesta had docked at Starbase Bravo, Captain Bennet had made his way around the station to find the office of Rear Admiral Seagraves. While the ship had been at high warp for a longtime, he had reviewed his orders from Starfleet Command. For the first time his order had been quite short and simple: report to Rear Admiral Seagraves for his new orders. Never encountering Seagraves before, he did not know what to expect. He knew of ‘her’ though back when he had survived the Klingon attack at Ajilon Prime and he had led his team to the Starfleet base at Tanandra Bay. He and the others had been survivors from the Farragut and after arriving at the base they had been debriefed by one of Seagraves’ people.

Eventually once he had found the office of the admiral, he had been greeted by the admiral’s chief of staff. Captain Bancroft had asked Zack to wait in a small area just outside Seagraves’ office. The admiral had called to Bancroft to send their guest in.

Entering the room, Bennet kept his posture strong but friendly. He had met with so many admirals in his career, he wondered if Seagraves would be fair and approachable like Fleet Admiral Luke Duncan or more direct and blunt like Fleet Admiral Nancy Clancy. That said, one thing he definitely knew that Seagraves would be nothing like his mother. In front of others, Admiral Judith Marshall-Bennet was quite professional, forthcoming and reasonable however while in the company of her children she became quite ‘mumsy’ when she knew she could get away with it.

“Captain Zack Marshall-Bennet, reporting as ordered, Admiral.” Bennet said as he looked over to where Seagraves was.

“Have a seat, Captain,” Seagraves replied. The tall, middle-aged woman was facing away from the door, hands clasped behind her back as she watched a Resolute-class starship passing next to the station.

Appreciating the gesture to take a seat in the chair opposite to her desk, Bennet did as he was told and took the chair.

“I’ve read the highlights of the Vesta’s logs from your time in command. Impressive work, managing to stay on the Romulan’s good side for the duration,” Seagraves noted, before turning around and sitting in her seat opposite from him.

Valuing that the admiral had read his reports on his exploration assignment with the Romulans, Bennet felt like he was starting to warm up to her. “Two first contact missions successfully completed, over five hundred parsecs mapped, encountering a school of star-jellies and avoiding a clash with a group of rogue Klingon birds-of-prey. Hopefully that’s enough to keep good relations with the Romulan Republic going for some time.”

“They’ll forget about it within the week and we’ll somehow resume being perceived as an assimilative culture that wants to absorb all of the former Star Empire,” Seagraves said, with a shrug. She slid a PADD across the desk to him, and then leaned back in her chair. “It was enough to earn you a new assignment, though.”

“A new assignment?” Bennet repeated as he looked at the PADD she handed him. As he opened it with his security clearance, he read the subject heading first and was shocked what it said. “I’m to take command of Task Force Seventeen?” He looked at the admiral. “Sorry ma’am, but can you elaborate this? I thought I was going to receive the next mission orders for the Vesta, not to be re-assigned?” He paused and skim read the introduction points. The one that stood out the most was that he was losing the Vesta as it was being sent back to Earth for an upgrade to its engines. Almost two-thirds of his crew would be assigned to the brand new built ship, USS Discovery. The Century-class ship would be assigned as the flagship of a new lead expeditionary force into the Delta Quadrant.

“A new assignment. Now, I hope that’s the last time I’m going to have to repeat myself in this conversation,” Seagraves replied, icily. “The Vesta is a fine ship for long-range solo exploratory missions, but she’s not suited for service as a flagship the way the Discovery will be. You’ll be coordinating field control of the Fourth Fleet’s long-range exploratory units from the Discovery in the Delta Quadrant.”

The admiral flipped through her holographic desk display to find a file and then pulled it off of the screen to float next to her above the desk. It showed the relative positions of Starbase Bravo, the Gradin Belt, the Nacene Reach and a handful of blue dots spread throughout the galaxy that indicated ships like the Vesta: solo, long-range exploratory vessels.

“Since we don’t have any starbases in the Delta Quadrant, we need an experienced captain to make calls that we won’t be able to from here; we do have communications between command and the Gradin Belt, but that’s not a substitute for on-the-ground leadership,” Seagraves elaborated, as the map highlighted the vast distances at work. “You’ve been a captain for seventeen years. If you’re going to keep resisting promotion, this is the best use of your talents.”

Shocked, stunned, surprised, the captain was out of words. A few times he had been offered the chance to take on a few other assignments, including being his mother’s chief of staff as well as teaching at Starfleet Academy. None of them had interested him. Realising there was nothing he could say about it, Bennet went on to discuss his new assignment with the admiral.

This would be a new ride for him, however he couldn’t help think that Starfleet was sending him far away to keep him quiet.

    “Are you serious Lucas?”

The moment the words left his mouth, Bennet wondered if he had been tactful enough with his delivery. Looking at his first officer who stood on the other side of his desk, he was hoping to change his mind.

“Absolutely.” Rider said. “I appreciate the gesture and the vote of confidence, but I don’t want a command of my own right now.”

Sighing with a bit of frustration at not going anywhere with it, Bennet nodded in acceptance eventually. “Fine, but I’m giving you exactly one year and then I’m firing you.”

Shocked to hear him say that, Rider shook his head in disbelief. “You can’t do that Zack!”

“I can!” Bennet replied quickly back with. “I get it that your career is one of the most unstable ones anyone has ever known with the amount of reassignments, but you have now had stability with Vesta for over six years now, before that four years on D-S-Twelve. Your next step should be to sit you in that centre chair.” Bennet paused. “Lucas, I say this as your friend and as your captain. You are hurting your career.”

“As I said, I appreciate that Zack but I don’t want to go.” Rider threw back. “You’re about to take on a brand new assignment. You’re going to be commanding more than one ship and you have to get used to a new ship. Not trying to sound big-headed here, but you need me at your side.”

“I need you at my side commanding one of these ships Starfleet is giving me.” Bennet replied. “Now more than ever Lucas, Starfleet needs good decent captains. Ones that are prepared to set the tone as we return to our mission of exploration. You’re one of them!”

Raising his hands to almost surrender, Rider rolled his eyes. “Please Zack, don’t give me the speech again.”

“One year and if you don’t accept a command elsewhere, I’m kicking you out of the nearest airlock and I will leave you in the Delta Quadrant!” Bennet countered with. “In the meantime can you please go through all of these crew assignments and make sure we’ve got everyone who was meant to be coming from the Vesta to the Discovery.”

Taking the PADD that Bennet had passed over, Rider acknowledged his orders. After taking a fast glance at the PADD he looked back at his captain. “Seriously Zack, I will consider it.” He paused. “Just not yet.”

Smiling at winning the battle, Bennet spoke up. “Starfleet doesn’t hold that chair out for long, Lucas. Don’t leave and find yourself being passed by upcoming officers like Natashar and MJ.” He then picked up another PADD of his that he had to read. “Now get out of here, I need to read more reports and find someone else to take command of these new ships Starfleet is giving me.”

“Understood sir.” Rider said with a smile as he left Bennet alone.

As soon as his Number One had left, Bennet relaxed a bit and got comfortable. His temporary office assigned to him on Starbase Bravo wasn’t exactly like his ready room on the Vesta, which he had now given up to its new commander, as such he was trying to make it feel more like home then it did. It would be another day or two until Discovery arrived at Starbase Bravo. In the meantime he had time to go over the mission parameters that Starfleet had given him.

Taking command of a small expeditionary force was like a dream come true for the experienced captain. Heading to the Delta Quadrant, he knew he would have to bring his top game and those he would lead, not just on Discovery, but from the other ships needed to be on their top game as well from his point of view. Looking over the list of the ships being assigned to him, he wondered what else he would do.

First off was the Galaxy-class ship USS Nobel, a veteran of the Dominion War and the oldest ship assigned to the mission, would host specialist teams from the Starfleet Corps of Engineers assigned to her to assist in the maintenance of the expeditionary force as well as deal with any other engineering matter that would arise during their time in the Delta Quadrant. With her industrial replicators and large cargo bays dedicated to storage for important parts, components and resources, the Nobel would extend the lifeline the expeditionary force required while they were so far away from Starfleet. Alongside this she was currently docked at Starbase Bravo undergoing a huge refit. A large part of that was the new impressive sickbay being put installed. Once completed it could provide state of the art medical assistance to anyone in the fleet if required to do so or deal with mass triage. Thankfully the ship had a captain already selected, Captain Sothaal Th'thriannen (or Thrian as he preferred to be known as) was similar in age like Bennet and had spent most of his career working with the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. A true miracle worker, Thrian had countless letters of commendations for his work.

Next was the Luna-class starship USS Triton. The Triton was the second oldest ship in the fleet, but needed an entire new crew after almost completing a year in dry-dock at the Devron Fleet Yards undergoing a massive refit to its computer systems. Starfleet had given Zack a list of possible candidates, they had highly recommended that he picked someone with a more scientific background due to the nature of the work the Triton would undertake as well as someone who had experienced working with multiple species from across the Federation.

After Triton was one ship that surprised Zack for being on his list. The USS Shackleton, a Rhode Island-class ship, would serve the fleet as its scout/surveyor. Its primary purpose would be to support ships like the Triton or Discovery undertaking their exploration efforts. Alongside this, if the force was separated in any way, it was Starfleet’s intention for the Shackleton to assist the Nobel with supply runs and providing tactical support to the much larger vessels. Due to it requiring more re-supplying than the others, the Shackleton would not be that far from the Nobel. Zack had wondered why Starfleet wanted a smaller ship assigned that needed so much support to survive, however he did notice they were assigning quite an experienced crew to it. He had made a note to ensure its new captain, once picked, understood they should remain close to the fleet at all times.

Finally the ship that he wanted his Number One to command, the Tereshkova, would be their heavily armed escort. The Inquiry-class was outfitted with numerous weapons and was brand new. Alongside this it would have multiple Hazard Teams who would leap into help out where appropriate. It was suitable for Lucas to take over.

The intercom went off and he was informed that an incoming call was coming in for him from Starfleet Command...it was his mother!

  • Devron Fleet Yards

Commander Makayla Adams was sitting in her temporary quarters on Devron Fleet Yards awaiting word on her next assignment as it seems that the Relentless was being decommissioned. She was sad to see the ship she served on for many years going to mothballs. She wondered if she would ever get command of her own, she was almost ready to just give up that dream when her computer chirped.

Raising an eyebrow she stood up and walked to the computer, turning it on she noticed there was a message from Captain Azras Dex, the Task Force Commanding Officer of Task Force 93. She was ordered to report to her office on the double. ‘Great, what have I done now?’ she quietly asked herself as she was alone in the room. She shrugged and headed out of her quarters and headed for Ops.

After a short while, she arrived and headed up towards where the Captain’s office was located. Once she reached the top of the stairs she was greeted by Commander Sari Mirel who was the previous Commander of the Relentless. “Welcome Commander, it is good to see you again,” Sari replied with a big smile as she came over to her.

“Good to see you as well Commander, I see you’re doing well.” She replied as she looked at her. “I was ordered to report to Captain Dex,” Makayla added as she looked at her as Sari nodded with a smile. “Come with me,” Sari replied as she led her to the Captain’s office.

“Captain Dex, Commander Adams is here,” Sari said to Azras who looked up and nodded. “You can go right in, will catch up later,” Sari replied as she walked off in the other direction as she watched her go before heading into the office.

“Please have a seat,” Azras replied as she motioned for the chair in front of her desk. Taking a seat, “thank you for coming so promptly.” Azras replied as she looked at her, “I am sure you’re wondering why I have asked you here. I will get right to the point, we need Commanding Officers and there are very few individuals who are qualified to step in that role.” Azras began as she took a pause watching Makayla’s reactions.

“Your service record as well as what Commander Mirel has said about you, you are ready for that position but.” She began but stopped for a brief moment before she continued her sentence. “There is a bit of a problem with the ship that is open and your rank.” She replied before reaching in her drawer, grabbing out a box before she stood up.

“Now if you could stand at attention,” she ordered as Makayla stood up in a bit of confusion, was she taunting her, or was there something more than what she was saying at that moment. She chooses not to say anything at the moment, not making haste judgment on something that could turn out in her favour.

“Commander, you have served the Relentless with distinction giving it your all. I hereby promote you to the rank of Captain with all the rights and privileges thereof.” Azras replied as she added another pip to her collar. “Congratulations, now that is out of the way we can go into detail of your new command,” Azras replied as she returned to her desk and sat down picking up a padd from her desk.

She handed it to the newly promoted Captain who took a moment to read it, her eyes widened. “ Sir, you’re giving me the USS Vesta? That is a top of the line vessel,” she responded as to think this was some kind of mistake or joke.

“That’s right, she is in need of a Captain and I believe you are the right person for that position. You are to report to Starbase Bravo to meet with the previous Captain to take over Command.” Azras replied, “the Relentless will take you there on its way back to Earth for decommissioning.” Azras added with a smile, “Congratulations Captain.” She added as she extended her hand towards her.

Taking the hand in return, “thank you, sir.” She replied with a smile, after a few more moments she was dismissed and Sari came back “Congratulations Captain, the Relentless is ready for you all your belongings have been transferred back aboard.” Sari replied as they said their goodbyes.

    Starbase Bravo

A few days had passed and the Relentless finally made it to Starbase Bravo, her belongings were transferred over to the Vesta. After a short walk to the docking bays she noticed the Vesta-class starship sitting in docking bay one, she was mesmerised by the sight of the large ship.

After a while, she made her way inside and headed for the bridge where she was told the previous Captain was located. “Captain on the bridge,” came a reply from one of the crew as she nodded and headed towards the ready room and pressed the door chime, and waited for a response.

Packing the last of his personal items, Zack looked up at the time on his desktop console and saw that the time told him what he was preparing for all day. The arrival of his successor.

    “Come in.” He answered.

Stepping into the private cabin, Zack was introduced to the woman who would be taking over as master of the Vesta. “Captain Adams, welcome aboard the Vesta.” Zack said as he extended his hand out towards the much younger officer.

Tugging at her uniform as she walked into the office and looked at the Captain, “thank you sir.” She replied as she walked up to the desk.

Vesta is a fine ship and I promise you we’ve left her in a good state for you.” Bennet remarked with the pleasantries. He had never met the woman before but she seemed friendly and worthy of the four pips on her uniform. “I’m informed your previous ship was the Relentless and you were with them for four years? My first command was a Defiant-class ship, the Brewster, their fast and nippy. I promise you after a week of being the Vesta you won't miss the cramped quarters.”

She nodded, “she was a good little ship and I enjoyed working with the crew.” She replied looking at him and chuckled at the last part. “Indeed, the quarters were a bit small.” She replied, “I was a bit surprised that my first command would be such a state of the art ship and a namesake.” She replied looking at him, “but I look forward to the challenge.” She quickly added as she stood there with her hands behind her back.

Smiling at the friendly woman who was taking over from him, Bennet spoke up. “Do you know what your first set of orders will be?”

“I have orders to report back to Devron Fleet Yards first, so I might find out what my first orders are then.” She replied with a smile as she looked at him.

“Well, should we head to the bridge and do the official hand-over? I hope you’re okay with us not doing it in our dress-uniforms?” Bennet asked.

“That is fine by me,” she replied with a slight chuckle. “They are a bit stiff anyways since they’re not worn too often.” She replied looking at him, she was both nervous and excited to get going with her new crew, though some of them would be transferred from the Relentless while a good majority was going to be new.

Gesturing for her to go ahead of him to leave the ready room, Bennet followed the newly minted captain out onto the bridge.

His first officer, who was standing in the centre of the room called for everyone to come to attention. Present were the entire senior staff, Bennet was pleased that they would all be joining him on the Discovery

Approaching the captain’s chair, Bennet turned to face Captain Adams. Smiling again, he cleared his throat and ordered the ship to open a ship-wide communication channel. The standard intercom whistle went off and Bennet’s voice could be heard through every part of the Vesta, a slight echo followed him. “All hands, attention to orders. From Starfleet Headquarters, Office of the Admiralty, to Captain Zachary Alexander Jonas Marshall-Bennet, commanding officer of the U-S-S Vesta. You are hereby requested and required to relinquish command of your vessel to newly-promoted Captain Makayla Adams, formerly of the U-S-S Relentless. Signed, Rear Admiral Aubrey Seagraves, stardate seven-six-zero-three-nine-point-seven.” Pausing to take a breath and looking up from the PADD he had just read from, Bennet gave his clearance. “Computer, transfer all command codes to Captain Adams, authorisation Bennet Four-Seven-Alpha-Tango.”

Beeping in acknowledgment, the computer then responded. “Transfer complete. U-S-S Vesta now under command of Captain Makayla Adams.”

Bennet extended his hand out towards Adam to shake it while with the other pass her the PADD.

Shaking his hand and taking command, “you are relieved, sir.” She replied as she smiled as she looked around the bridge for a moment before meeting his gaze once more. “She will be in good hands,” she replied.

“I stand relieved,” Bennet said and after they both finished shaking hands, everyone started to clap.

That was it. The Vesta was now under the command of Captain Adams. The Bennet chapter had now closed.

After that was finished the Captain and those that were going with him departed, those that had orders to stay started congratulating her. “She’s a fine ship, she will serve you well Captain.” Came one reply as the officer looked at her with a smile.

“Open a channel to Starbase Bravo,” Adams replied as she took the centre seat. “Channel open sir,” came the reply from the operations officer. “Starbase Bravo this is USS Vesta requesting permission to disembark,” She requested.

“USS Vesta you are clear for departure, save journey.” Came the reply from the docking master before the comm channel had ended.

She looked at the officer stationed at the helm station, “disengage mornings and docking clamps and set us to reverse out of space doors at one-quarter impulse until cleared of the doors. Once clear set course for Devron Fleet Yards at maximum warp.” She replied as the helm officer nodded and began the procedure. The Vesta started to slowly begin to move backwards towards the space doors.

Standing now watching from one of the viewing galleries in Starbase Bravo, Captain Bennet watched as his former command left the confines of the starbase before it stretched out into the darkness of space and soon left him behind. “Bon voyage.” He whispered before turning to his first officer with a smirk as they went on to start their next assignment.

The USS Vesta was now on its way to Devron Fleet Yards in hopes to get her first assignment once she arrived.

Today was the day and Michael was nervous he had been asked to report to the Task Force CO’s office. He had just arrived at the base the day before and was still trying to get acquainted with the station.

Zack Bennet...Zack Bennet I don’t see that name anywhere. I feel like I’m looking for a needle in a haystack.

Michael was about to give up hope when he turned the corner and the office was ahead of him. He closed his eyes and thought about what Sophie had said to him “Just remember that they called for you. Don’t be nervous, I know you’ll do great honey.”

Michael counted to three before activating the door chime. He adjusted his uniform and the pips, as he did a smile formed he was about to be assigned for the position of his dreams.

He had done so much in his career and had never thought this day would come. He was wearing command red which he would have to get used to. All the people acknowledging him were not normal. He had some respect, but never the point that command red showed.

Hearing the door chime go off, Captain Bennet looked up from the PADD he held in his hands and told the person on the other side to come in. Walking in was a very tall muscular man in command red. With the rank of commander, Bennet assumed it was his new Chief Strategic Operations Officer. “Commander Ryder?”

“Yes, Sir!” he stood up straight.

“Pleasure to meet you, I’m Captain Zack Marshall-Bennet.” Bennet said as he stood up and extended his hand to shake the other man’s hand.

Michael took the Captain's hand and shook it. “The pleasure is all mine Captain Bennet.” Michael looked around the office and it seemed modest, which he approved of.

“Please take a seat.” Bennet gestured towards one of the arm chairs on the other side of his glass desk. “I hope your transfer from Jupiter Station wasn’t too awkward for you?”

Michael took a seat and settled in before nodding. “The transfer felt like any other.” He chuckled. “This isn’t the first transfer I have had though I was on the same ship for an extended period of time.”

“Well I hope you understand that I needed you here, sooner rather than later with our upcoming mission.” Bennet said with a friendly smile.

The Captain was good at his job making Michael feel welcome. “Jupiter Station was a challenge for sure. That Station was a mess and I had to clean up the mess made by the prior Chief.” Michael shook his head. “The station is probably now in the best shape it has ever been in.”

“Then you’re ready for your next assignment then.” Bennet offered him the PADD he had been working on. “As Chief Strategic Operations Officer for the Discovery, along with my new command of Task Force Seventeen, I’ll be depending on you to know your stuff when it comes to the Delta Quadrant. Have you read anything from the Voyager database?”

Michael nodded “I have done extensive research on the records. In fact when I was told I got the position I immediately dived into the many records for Voyager that were available to me though some are still sealed.”

“And your initial thoughts of some of the species, besides the Borg, that we may encounter?” Bennet enquired.

Michael thought carefully for a moment. “It all depends on where we go, but there is the chance to encounter Hirogen, Kazon, Krenim, Malon, Species 8472, Vaadwaur, Vidiians. That’s just to name the hostiles. We would have a big list of allies as well including god forbid Q.”

“Well then Mister Ryder, the Discovery will be arriving in two days time. I want you to prepare a briefing for the senior staff and the rest of the fleet, once we assemble ready for our trip to Guardian Station.” Bennet ordered.

“Yes, Sir! It will be done” Michael stood up and nodded.

“Thank you commander.” Bennet said and then dismissed the man from his office. Glad he had another good player joining his team on this crazy mission that Starfleet would be sending him on.

    USS Discovery NCC-82006
Docked at Starbase 38, Barzan System, Alpha Quadrant
    Stardate: 76415.61

It was busy in the large main crew lounge. Jam-packed would be the best phrase to describe it. Noisy was another word to use with the huge crowd that were all mingling and getting to know one another. But it wasn’t a deafening sound as the ship’s jazz band, made up of a range of the Discovery’s crew that were musicians, played softly in the background and could be heard by all. Spirits were high as food and drink was shared, but no-one was unruly like a bunch of drunk Klingons toasting to their recent honourable victory. This was subtle, a Starfleet subtle.

Gazing at the pleasing image before him, Commodore Bennet held a glass of Aldebaran whiskey and was sipping on it. The Discovery was hosting the crews from the rest of the ships in the expeditionary task force and those also joining them for their trip into the Delta Quadrant. While every ship was docked at Starbase 38, Bennet felt it was important as they would all be working closely together that everyone got to know one another a lot better. The crews had worked together during the recent Archanis Campaign but it wasn’t what they had originally been assembled for.

Pleased to see one face he had yet to see since taking command of the Discovery and the task force, was his task force executive officer: Captain Alexandra Sudari-Kravchik. She would be assuming command of the USS Nobel, their Galaxy-class ship. The change in command of the ship was a last-minute decision from Starfleet after it was felt that Captain Thrain was needed to remain on Haydorian to calm the situation with the colony’s governor. As a result, Kravchik would find herself more involved in maintaining the expeditionary force as well as heading up diplomatic efforts too.

“Captain, it’s good to finally meet you.” The commodore greeted with a warm smile as he extended his hand towards her.

“And you as well Commodore,” Alexandria said, not stumbling over any ranks by virtue of having no habits in that regard. “Face to face is far more personable than a hologram,” she said with a faint smile that did extend to her eyes.

Offering her a drink, Bennet turned to one of the nearby waiters and asked for a glass of the same green whiskey he was sipping on. Passing it over to her, he toasted towards her with a simple ‘cheers’ and the two clinked their glasses together before taking in some of the strong potent beverage.

“Have you had a chance to settle into your new command yet?” Bennet asked as he pulled his glass away from his lip.

“Not yet Sir. The Nobel was late arriving due to answering an S-O-S on her way here. I have been aboard and assumed command, met the XO, Commander Jezgo, who I have had the pleasure of working with before and my belongings are being transferred across, but that is about it so far.”

“Well let me know if there’s anything I can do in helping you adjust to your new command.” Bennet remarked.

“Will do, Sir. The Nobel only had a few gaps in her crew roster before Captain Thrain was reassigned and Commander Jezgo was fighting with BuPers to fill the gaps already. I have given her some contacts to call and we will expedite who we can before we leave. If I can not make BuPers come to heal, I will give you a call Sir,” Alexandria said, head nodding in acknowledgement to a raised hand in the crowd from someone she knew.

Suggesting they take a seat at a nearby empty booth that was far away from the larger crowd, Bennet led them over and sat down. “It’s good to see everyone getting to know one another.”

“After all that fuss in Archanis, it is good to see as well. Crews all need a chance to unwind and relax a little bit before launching through the Barzan wormhole and getting to work in the Delta Quadrant,” Alexandria responded.

“So have you read our first mission orders?” Bennet asked her.

“I have, and I am keen actually. Good old fashion exploration and relationship building. Voyager after all barely scratched the surface, we will be able to do a lot more, see a lot more. Though I understand we are following in the footsteps of a few ships that have gone before us already, ships that launched off on long range exploration before the recent reorganisation, yes?” Alexandria asked, though of course she had read the reports already.

“Yes, I’m eager to ensure their efforts are backed up as well. We’re going to head to Kadi first, strengthen our diplomatic relations with them before beginning a bit of a tour of the nearby region. The Gradin Belt has a lot to offer us.” Bennet explained. “I want you to head up our efforts in setting up relations with a businessman in the area known as Abaddon. Have you heard of him?”

“I believe the brief I have seen on him says a boneyard operator,” Alexandria said, but she didn’t have anything more specific, her attention more on the government actors of the region, not single actors.

“That’s right, he owns a huge junkyard but my thinking is if we can set up some kind of business transaction with him we may be able to find someone who could provide us with resources while we are in the region. I know every ship will be full to the brim with supplies, but I think if we can find a way to find a consistent supply chain when we cannot access the wormhole then I’m all for it.” Bennet shared. “Up to the challenge?”

“Certainly sir. I am sure we can arrange some sort of business arrangement with him to make some introductions in the region for us. I am sure we have some sort of offering we can make to him for such.” Alexander responded.

“Good, while you’re doing that I’m sending the others to study a nearby particle fountain. It’s one thing Starfleet is keen to learn more about, so it makes sense to send the Triton ahead with the others to do it while we’re busy establishing some good relations with the neighbours.” Bennet stated.

“Is this the same particle fountain mentioned in Voyager‘s files in relation to Abaddon?” Alexandria asked.

“It is, Admiral Janeway wrote in her reports that they never remained in the region long enough to establish why a shuttlecraft they purchased from Abaddon was keen to return to it.” Bennet remarked. “Our theorists have been wondering if the fountain is some sort of gateway to another dimension.” Before he could say another word, Bennet was interrupted by the arrival of another familiar face he had met during the recent Klingon assault. Walking up to them was Captain Langston, the skipper of the Fearless. “Captain Langston, it’s a pleasure to see you.”

“After that mess with the renegade Klingons, I can truly say it is a delight to be here with you all,” he replied.  He was attentive to the present company of Commodore Bennet, nodding politely to each nearby.

“I didn’t think the Fearless would be here for another day or so.” Bennet said as he shook the man’s hand. “How did you get that aging Excelsior-class to move so fast?”

Ed reciprocated Bennet’s gesture of greeting with a firm handshake of his own.  He chuckled at Bennet’s humoured inquiry with a lighthearted smile and responded with similar disposition, “the promise of shore leave I’m sure; to be honest, I’m not sure who needs it more, the ship or the fledglings.”  There was more he could have said, more he would have liked to have said, but it was clear this was neither the time or place for such candor.

Smirking at the response, Bennet offered for Langston to join them. “Captain, please meet Captain Alexandra Sudari-Kravchik, my right hand woman in leading this expeditionary force.”

Ed turned his attention in diplomatic fashion, extending his hand for a warm greeting.  “Captain, we’re a bold and zealous bunch, but I promise you’ll get no trouble from us”.  He turned his focus back to Bennet with a nod as he continued the introduction.

“Captain, this is Captain Edmond Langston of the Fearless. I believe the last time we all spoke was during the Archanis Campaign.” Bennet said finishing the introductions.

“A pleasure to talk to you again Captain. I am relieved to actually see an Excelsior-class along with the mission, they are after all known for their reliability. Something that a hundred years of refinement and perfection will grant any class of ship I am sure,” Alexandria said with a polite smile and a warm handshake in response to Langston’s invitation to the growing universal gesture.

As Langston took a seat, the commodore continued with his chat with Kravchik and included the Fearless’ captain now, “I was just explaining about our first few orders that Starfleet want us to indulge ourselves in.”

“A delectable indulgence I hope,” Langston replied; his voice riddled with mild sarcasm.  He continued, purposefully shifting to a serious and dutiful collaborator, “something of the ‘seek out new life and new civilisations variety?’”

“It’s funny you should say that,” Bennet said as he took another sip from his glass. “Once we’ve sorted out establishing a local foothold, I’m keen for the expeditionary force to head to New Talax.”

“No doubt I will be bringing Nobel up behind everyone in the task force,” Alexandria said. “I almost feel like I am going to need a fleet of California or Parliaments to run around and chase up all the second or third contacts.” She sipped her drink and looked at Bennet. “Though I suppose dragging along a gaggle of smaller ships is outside our remit currently. What of the other vessels already in the Delta Quadrant? The likes of Apollo and Atlantis come to mind.”

“They’re beyond the Gradin Belt from the last set of reports I read. So while they’re going one way, we go in the opposite direction.” Bennet answered. “The Federation Council is keen to re-establish ties with our Delta Quadrant Ambassador to see what is happening. Not that we are able to set up a base of operations with the Talaxians due to the Jankata Accord, but having something at the end of the Gradin Belt may help us in the long term. We’ve been authorised to assist the Talaxians in any shape or form with their colony development.” Bennet shared. “We’ll need to negotiate with the Turei the use of their underspace for some of our journey before making our way at high warp for the rest of it. But that said the new enhanced warp engines should make it easier. Captain Langston, I hear the Fearless’ upgrades are almost complete. I’ve seen you will be docked at Starbase Thirty-Eight for the next day receiving the refit.”

Ed nodded affirmatively, “that is correct.  A few of our eager crew members have skipped out on their shore leave and agreed to assist in the refits, so we may be up and running before that forty eight hour mark.  However, I am expecting everyone to take some R&R after that bout with the Klingons.”

“As the saying goes, there’s no rest for the wicked.” Bennet said with a smirk. “That said,  once the Fearless is up and ready, we’ll need to sit down and discuss your orders for the Delta Quadrant.” Bennet said as he soon realised there were plenty of captains he would need to meet in the coming days before they entered the Barzan Wormhole.

“Number One, open a channel to the fleet.” Bennet said as he rose from his seat, still staring at the viewscreen showing a number of ships that were prepped and ready to go.

“Channel open.” Rider replied after following his commanding officer’s orders.

“This is Commodore Zack Marshall-Bennet of the Discovery, all ships prepare for departure stations. The wormhole is about to open, prepare to follow the Discovery’s lead.” Bennet took a breath before adding one more single word. “Godspeed!”

While he stood staring at the viewscreen waiting for the wormhole to open, Rider spoke up after a signal came through to his station. “The fleet’s responded sir, they’re standing by.”

Within a few seconds alerts began to beep at the science station and Discovery’s Bolian science officer looked at them before looking across her commanding officer. “Commodore, the wormhole is about to appear.”

    “Onscreen Gailwon.” Bennet ordered immediately.

Once again the screen changed and this time it showed the magnificent image of the Barzan wormhole opening. The unusual disc-like shaped wormhole was unique with the various blues, purples and blacks that almost swirled inwards towards its center.

A round of applause erupted on the bridge and Bennet just smiled at his crew’s eagerness. “Number One,” the commodore said, still grinning at the image before them. “Inform the fleet to engage!”

Discovery led the pack of Federation explorers as one at a time they entered the Barzan wormhole. One at a time they followed each other through the subspace corridor that eventually deposited them in the deep reaches of the Delta Quadrant.

The moment the Century-class flagship was through its commander requested a status update and once everyone had reported they were all fine, then Bennet waited to see every ship that followed come through the wormhole without any issues.

“Everyone is through sir.” announced Gailwon. “The wormhole has closed behind us and the verteron array has ceased operations.”

“Sir,” puffed out Lieutenant Caitheris from her breathing apparatus. The Barzan woman was at the ops station and was obviously reconfiguring the ship’s systems to adjust to their new location. “We are getting a transmission from Kadi Station Delta One.”

Impressed to see that they were being hailed already, Bennet looked to his chief counsellor/chief diplomatic officer and second officer. Commander Natashar Rozan, the Betazoid he had trusted for a long time now, shared his surprise. Turning his attention back to Caitheris, Bennet ordered his ops manager to open a channel as he sat himself back down in his chair.

The viewscreen flickered and a Kadi man, wrapped in burgundy clerical robes appeared. He appeared younger than Bennet with small wisps of blonde hair tied back and underneath his head scarf. His distinguished bulbous, bifurcated forehead was prominent. Bowing his head, the monk then smiled and spoke. “Distant voyagers who have departed the confines of their dependency and origins, we welcome you into our dependency, our origins. Accept this greeting of our purity and the Goddess Mother's blessing.”

Bennet had spent the day before with Rozan practising the different range of Kadi greetings and soon it clicked in his brain that it was the reverse opposite greeting that they were providing. “Wonderous and humble hosts, on behalf of my home, my family, we accept your gracious reception and thank you for your welcome to your home, your family.”

Smiling with thanks, the Kadi monk introduced himself as Abbot Jamin the leader of the outpost. “We have been expecting your arrival, Commodore Bennet.” He added.

“We are very happy to be here.” Bennet replied. He considered every word carefully to avoid any diplomatic incident with the Kadi. “My ships are elevated to begin their exploration of this region.”

“I am sure they are.” Jamin responded back with. “Besides your own ship, I bestow to you all the Goddess Mother’s guardianship to begin your voyages.”

“Thank you Abbot Jamin, I believe I will be attending a retreat with Superior Abbott Tomin on the Kadi home colony tomorrow.” Bennet said for clarity.

“Indeed you are. Good voyages to you and your crew on your path to our home, our family.”

Smiling and bowing his head, Bennet thanked the abbot and the channel was closed. He leaned into his counsellor. “Remind me never to go into the priesthood.” He said quietly before ordering his chief helmsman to plot a course to the Kadi home colony while his first officer ordered the fleet to move out.

Operation: Delta Expedition was now a go!

    In this release:

    • Operation: Delta Expedition begins!

    • Commodore Bennet leads the fleet through the Barzan wormhole.

    • If you are a junior officer (ENS-LT) and part of TF17 you can get involved by being on the Discovery with the following ideas/suggestions:

      • Perhaps your character watched from one of the numerous crew lounges situated around the leading edge of the saucer section as the ship entered the wormhole. What was their reaction?

      • After the fleet’s arrival perhaps take a shuttle/runabout out to one of the other ships with supplies. What do you notice/react to being in the Delta Quadrant?

      • Take a runabout out to the Kadi station to support with maintenance/supply-run.

      • Undertake training Delta Quadrant on the holodeck by engaging in a simulation to take on the aggressive aliens (e.g.: the Borg, the Kazon, the Devore, the Malon, the Hirogen, etc.).

Returning to his quarters in agony, Commodore Bennet felt exhausted after what felt like almost two days of hell. The banquet in their honour on the Kadi Home Colony was not as short as he had imagined it to be. Instead it had lasted over several days and it required him and other members of the crew to engage in a range of rituals.

The past forty-eight hours had him fasting and undergoing some physical trials that made the Starfleet Academy marathon seem like a gentle jog in Yosemite Park. Returning to the ship in just his outdoor gear, he had sat down in one of his arm chairs when the chime to his quarters went off.

    “Come in.” He mumbled.

Entering in with a PADD in one hand was his first officer and close friend. “Hey Com-” Commander Rider paused in that moment when he realised the state of his superior officer. “You okay Zack?”

Nodding a few times, Bennet sat up. “Yeah I’m fine, just tired from all of this diplomatic etiquette we need to undergo with the Kadi.” He rubbed his face. “I could die for a hamburger right now nevertheless we’ve renewed our working contract with them and the trade deal is firmly established. Our people can start working more with them in keeping the Barzan wormhole around in this area of the Gradin Belt.”

Smirking at the suffering his boss was undertaking for the greater good, Rider passed him the PADD. “Well while you were gone, nothing exciting happened but some of our runabouts have returned from their first initial missions. Michael has been leading on around the clock simulations against various hostile Delta Quadrant species. Also we’ve heard from the rest of the expeditionary force. The Nobel has arrived at the junkyard while the others are continuing their observations of the particle fountain. I thought you would appreciate an update.”

Taking the PADD, Bennet showed his appreciation with a smile. He got up and as he made his way over to the replicator he read the device’s content. “I had a thought about Discovery while I was down with the Kadi.”

“A vision perhaps?” Rider quipped back.

Bennet ordered a glass of water and smirked at his friend. “Yeah, I suppose you could say that.” He took a sip. “With me having to focus on the task force, especially with these types of engagements with local alien races that we hope to make friends with, well it means my focus can’t always be on the Discovery.”

Confused as to what his friend meant, Rider shook his head gently. “What are you getting at Zack?”

“It’s not fair on the crew that I can’t focus on them and the ship’s needs when I need to be looking at the bigger picture.” Bennet remarked and turned to his first officer. “I’m promoting you to captain and giving you the Discovery.”

Shocked to hear that, Rider’s expression reflected his response. “Are you crazy Zack? Has that last ritual knocked common sense out of you?”

“Far from it.” Bennet stated. “You said it yourself when we moved to Discovery that I need you here instead of taking command of one of the other ships in the fleet. Well that’s true but I need you in command of the ship while I command the task force.” The commodore took a larger gulp from his water. “So what’s your answer?”

Rider thought about it for a second. “Okay,” He agreed. “But you keep your flag on the Discovery, right?”

“Absolutely.” Bennet said. “There may be the odd occasion I’d need to visit other ships, like the Nobel, and it might be easier if I take the yacht or one of the runabouts for that. Any other time I am here and I’d remain in command of the mission while you command the ship. Deal?”

“Deal, but I get to pick my first officer.” Rider said. “I don’t want Starfleet bringing anyone in. Natashar is more than ready for it.”

“Agreed.” Bennet said with a smile. “Right, if you’ll excuse me. I need to take a shower before I head back to the closing ceremony and finish off these talks with Superior Abbott Tomin. ” As Bennet winced across his quarters, he spoke up one more time. “We’ll announce the change of command in the morning Lucas!”

    In this release:

    • The Federation has reaffirmed its contract with the Kadi in maintaining the Barzan wormhole and has established a new trade deal.

    • The Discovery is now under the command of Captain Lucas Rider (NPC).

    • If you are a junior officer (ENS-LT) and part of TF17 you can get involved further by being on the Discovery with the following ideas/suggestions:

      • Visit the Kadi Home Colony - describe a ritual you may have to undertake before enjoying what is around.

      • Engage with or lead one of the combat simulations on the holodeck.

      • Take a runabout out to explore the Kadi system further.

      • Remember you can also engage with one of the other ships in the expeditionary force. Perhaps have a runabout that needs to catalogue the junkyard (see USS Nobel thread) or a runabout with the other ships (USS Luna, USS Shackleton and USS Tereshkova) that is currently studying the particle fountain.

“Commodore’s log stardate seven-six-four-three-six point six, we’ve completed our diplomatic engagement with the Kadi. To say that this has been a learning curve for us is understandment.”

Walking side by side down the corridor of the Century-class ship, Commodore Bennet and Superior Abbott Tomin led the small delegation towards the transporter room.

“Your excellency, it has been an absolute privilege and honour to spend these last few days with you and your people.” Bennet remarked as the doors to the room they were approaching swished open.

Bowing courteously and respectfully with his head, Tomin led his half of their party up onto the platform before them. “It has been quite pleasing to indulge ourselves in some of your colourful traditions again commodore.”

Tomin, who had originally assessed Voyager many years ago, now led his people. The senior clerical figure wore his grey robes with a form of distinction, but there was a slight twinkle in his eye that showed he enjoyed being in the presence of the Federation again. Bennet, being the only one who had clearance to read a portion of the reports that had been marked as almost off the record by Admiral Janeway, had enjoyed the abbott’s company and eagerness to explore the Discovery. He was probably one of the most liberal individuals he had met from the Kadi society. Quietly the man had requested that Bennet keep what had happened decades ago on Voyager quiet. Bennet was happy to comply and assured him that it would not cloud his judgement in their talks. The Starfleet flag officer wanted to show that the Federation had principles and didn’t just bargain their way through talks by holding those in high office of state to bribery.

“Anytime your excellency wishes to visit and we are in the area, please do just give us.” Bennet said with a friendly smile.

Tomin looked to his aide and nodded for them to place their going away gift over the neck of Commodore Bennet. Gratefully, Bennet accepted the gift.

“Gracious hosts who have let us join the sanctity of their home and family, we pass the goddess mother’s blessings on to you and your crew.” The aide said as he placed the silver medallion over Bennet. The gift was a simple silver chain with what looked like a locket in the centre. Sitting in the middle of the locket was a dark reddish gem that Bennet didn’t recognise.

“Thank you.” Bennet said before he nodded to the transporter chief and ordered for him to energise the transporter.

Within seconds the Kadi delegation was beamed off the ship and stepping forward from the door was Captain Rider.

“That looks expensive.” Rider remarked when he pointed to the medallion around Bennet’s neck.

Looking at it, Bennet agreed with him. “I’ve got a feeling it's beryllium crystal.” He then looked back up to Rider. “What’s on the agenda next then captain?”

Rider was still smiling at hearing Bennet call him that. Instead of reacting to it he answered the question. “We’re to head to the junkyard to join the Nobel.”

“Sounds good.” Bennet said. “Perhaps digging through some old scraps would be a nice change of scenery from all of the pomp and circus of a diplomatic function.”

“Well who knows what other gems we may end up finding.” Rider gestured towards the gem around Bennet’s neck as they exited the transporter room to head to the bridge.

    USS Discovery NCC-82006
Abaddon's Repository of Lost Treasures, Gradin Belt, Delta Quadrant
    Stardate: 76437.1

Journeying towards the junkyard had been uneventful for the crew of the USS Discovery, in fact it had given Commodore Bennet plenty of time to catch up on reports that he had been leaving for some time now. He had kept himself up to date on how the Odyssey was dealing with the Uxali and that the Elysion was underway to provide aid to the Dagmari. In between that he had written a formal report for Starfleet Command as well as the Federation Council regarding the Kadi.

After being called to the bridge by Captain Rider, Bennet had obliged when the call had come in and was now travelling upwards in a turbolift. When he stepped off the turbolift, he automatically noticed the calmness and was pleased that no-one shouted ‘admiral on deck’. That had been a protocol he had temporarily suspended on the ship.

Walking over to the centre of the chair, Bennet noticed that Rider was in deep conversation with an alien he had not recognised at first before he realised who it was.

    Abaddon.

Noticing the arrival of the flag officer, Rider paused his discussion and turned to Bennet. “Commodore Bennet, this is Mister Abaddon-”

“As I said to your Captain Rider, the name was passed down from my father and his father before him. I plan to pass it down to my son but what can I say, except that we’re not a very imaginative bunch!” the flamboyant character said with a huge smile plastered across his face.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mister Abaddon.” Bennet said with a smile.

“The pleasure is all mine Commodore Bennet and please let me welcome you to Abaddon's Repository of Lost Treasures. As I’ve said to your colleagues, please take a look around. You may find something you never knew you wanted!” Abaddon remained cheerful.

Smiling back at the older gentleman, Bennet showed his appreciation for the man’s flare with a greeting. “Thank you Mister Abaddon, we are here to rendezvous with the U-S-S Nobel. I’m assuming she’s still here?”

“Ah yes, your beautiful task force executive officer took off the other day to catalogue my vast array of collectibles. I believe they’re quite deep into the yard.” Abaddon cleared up. “You will also need to enter as communication is dampened by the amount of ships we have.”

“Indeed, your inventory seems to have exploded since Voyager had encountered you almost twenty years ago.” Rider mentioned.

Smiling at how big his junkyard was, Abaddon took further pride in Rider’s remarks. “A fantastic opportunity with the Turei came my way. Now your Captain Kravchik remarked you would be interested in setting up a deal with me. Why don’t you both join me for a meal and we can discuss terms? My galley is filled with treasure treats from across the quadrant. I’m sure we can find something to entice your taste buds!”

“Thank you very much, that’s awfully kind of you.” Bennet said. “Let me speak with Captain Kravchik first and we will go from there. In the meantime, can I send in our teams to begin to catalogue your treasures?”

Abaddon agreed to the request. “Absolutely, but all I say is if anyone damages anything then-”

“We pay for it?” Bennet offered.

“Indeed and if you try to steal anything, I promise you we are capable of getting what is stolen back. Good day Commodore Bennet.” Abaddon then closed the channel.

Turning to Rider, Bennet gave the order to launch their runabouts to find the Nobel so he and Kravchik could take their next steps with the eccentric businessman.

      • Start to catalogue the range of ships/junk at the yard.

      • Transport over to one of the derelicts and have an adventure on board (perhaps a ghost story?).

      • What treasures could be found on the abandoned ships?

      • Engage with some joint writing with any of the TF Senior Staff.

    • Remember you can also engage with one of the other ships in the expeditionary force. Perhaps have a runabout with the other ships (USS Luna, USS Shackleton and USS Tereshkova) that are currently studying the particle fountain.
